1. Morrison personifies winter and uses metaphors to compare it to Mr MacTeer because it holds some traits he has. For example she describes his face by saying   ” his high forehead is the frozen sweep of the erie, hiding currents of gelid thoughts that eddy in the darkness”.

2. Pecola is harassed by a group of boys by them calling her Black e mo. It affects her because it makes her feel worse about herself and she feel helpless. This is reminiscent of common bullying because bully happens to many people and they feel the same a Pecola did.

3. Maureen was a white popular girl at school who was rich compared to Claudia and Frieda and had long brown hair. Maureen tried to be friends with Pecola but  began asking questions about her and and her father which was the real reason she approached her in the first place.

4. Claudia and Frieda see Maureen as everything they are not which is rich, beautiful, white, and popular. They begin to question themselves if they were good enough after seeing a “perfect” child.

5. When the MacTeer sisters meet the prostitues they stay away from them and don’t bother with them.

6. Geraldine which  the mother of one of the boys who was bullying Pecola Junior. She puts her cat above everyone and everything even her own her son. She hardly ever loves anything so you can tell she sees something special about it.

7. Geraldine gives junior anything he needs without showing any emotions to him.  He begins to realize that the cat gets treated way better then him  and he doesn’t like it at all ! He treated Pecola the way he did because he takes all his hatred out on other from the way his mother makes him feel.

8. In the beginna Junior was bullying Pecola. Later on Junior treated Pecola  as if he wants to be her  friend so he can trick her into going into his house. Geraldine treats pecola like shes nothing, she called her all types of names and yelled at her. Pecola doesnt stcik up for herself once again so this leaves her feeling even more bad about herself.

Monthly Book Club November
To Kill a Mockingbird
Harper Lee
I think the author’s purpose in writing this book was to tell how discrimanation used to be back in the day, and how something as simple as a persons skin color could make people believe thata person would do such horrible things.
I think the attendent audience for this book is honestly for anybody on a mature reading level. I think any reader could enjoy this if they undersatnd what is actually going on.
I rate this book as a 10
Describe a minor character/person in the book who had major importance. Explain.
One minor character in this book was Tom Robinson’s lawyer Atticus. I say this because he was a white lawyer defending a african american so many people made nasty comments and viewed him as a bad guy, but he still did his job and defended him. And at the end of the story he was unfourtantly found guilty just because the color of his skin !

Story

This is a sad, interesting story about a woman named Monique who’s ex-husband died in the 911 attack.

The thing that made this story affective was the emotion and life in it. it actually made me feel like I knew her and I felt her pain.

The thing that stands out to me is during her ex-husbands last seconds of his life he called her to remind her how much he loved her and their children. And to ask her recent husband if he will be the father of his children.

My was reaction to this  was filled with a ton of emotions. It made me almost tear it gets really deep I don’t know how i would have reacted if I were in this actual situation.

i choose this story because it is involves a climax, a conflict and it makes you feel like you are apart of it. </3

Esperanza Rising

Pam Munoz Ryan

From 1-10 I would rate this book as a 9

I think the author’s purpose in writing Esperanze Rising to to portray struggles, hardship, and hope to the readers.

I think the intendant audience for this book is young teens. I would say that because it is about a teenaged girl who is going through a very hard time and I’m sure a lot of young teens can somewhat relate to some of the issues and struggles that Esperanzea was going through.

Act 1: 1-3 Study questions

1. The causes that Saleio and Solanio suggest for Antonio’s melancholy is because all his money is invested in  merchant ships, and at any time, those ships could sink or be destroyed. Solanio also suggests that Antonio is in love.

2. The humorous advice that Gratiano offers Antonio is to cheer up because only fools are negative all the time.

3. Bassanio wants Antonio to lend him more money because he wants to go to Belmot so he can marry Portia.

4. Portia is angry with her deceased father because in his  will he wished for Portia to choose her husband through a game of riddles that he made before he died.

5. Nerissa  tells Portia she “need not fear” her welcome suitors because she is basically saying that Portia will eventually find love.

6. Portia and Nerissa think Bassanio was the best man out of the choices that deserved Portia.

7.According to Shylock he hates Antonio because he lends money without charging any interest, and Shylock on the other hand  charges very high rates of interest.

8. Shylock is indignant over Antonio’s request because he is a Christian and he has spit on Shylock.

9. Antonio’s response to Shylock’s accusation is that he shouldn’t lend the money to friends, but to enemies, which basically  means to  keep it professional.

10. In exchange for what Shylock agrees to lend Antonio and Bassanio money is that Shylock wants a pound of flesh, in order to loan Antonio and Bassanio the money if they do not pay back what they owe.

Act II 1-9 Study questions

1. Morocco fears Portia will reject him at the outset because of the color of his skin.

2. Bassanio’s reservation about Gratiano accompanying him to Belmont is that Bassanio makes Gratiano assure him that he is going to behave on the voyage.

3. Jessica’s dilemma concerning her father, Shylock  is that she is ashamed of being his daughter .

4. Lorenzo plans to disguise Jessica in order for her to escape from her father by disguiseing her as a boy.

.5. Before going to dine with Antonio and Bassanio,Shylock tells Jessica lock all the doors, and stay inside.

6. Jessica not want Lorenzo to see her when he arrives at Shylock’s house because she doesn’t want him to see her dressed as a boy.

7. Morocco’s rationale for choosing the gold casket was because he says she is worth nothing less and every man wants to be with her

8. The news that Salerio heard that was making him anxious was that he  heard some ships sunk, believing that it might be Bassanio’s ships.

9. Solanio’s interpret of Antonio’s sadness at Bassanio’s departure is because his best friend has left and he lives for him.

10. Aragon chooses the silver casket because he believes he deserves Portia.

The Lady With the Pet Dog Joyce Carol Oates

1. I like Oates’s version of the story “The Lady and The Pet Dog” better. I think it gives more detail in how they met and it shows how he drastically changed. 2. Anna was  sad and unhappy after the affair on Nantucket because she didn’t know what to think or do and she wasn’t really into satisfied with her marriage, but at the same time, she didn’t know if she was in LOVE with Gurov. 3. I think that Anna and the story itself is repeating. 4. Anna’s attitue towards men is bad I say this beacause she probably gets a devistating vision of men becasue the way her husband treats her and how Gurov has children and a wife and is still messing around with her. She didn’t feel as though it was right of him to do that knowing  they were both married. 5. I’m not all the way  sure why Anna is attracted to her Gurov. What i learn about their spouses is that they were never really with eachother and that is probably the reason they were unhappily married couples.Gurov’s  wife moved to a textbook publishing company and was suppostly doing well,on the other hand  Anna’s husband was always at work she  also left the house once in a while because she needed some “self time” and this is how her and Gurov got aqquanited.

Chekhov’s Lady With the Pet Dog 5 Questions.

1.  It is significant that the setting of the story “The Lady with the Pet Dog” is a resort town, because both Anna and Gurov are away from their husband/wife and are on vacation. This is an opportunity for the both of them to be free and relaxed individuals. The vacation atmosphere effects the action because since they are both on vacation they are not worried about anything, they are relaxed and opened minded, and ready to try and do new things. Knowing that they were both in an unhappy marriage being in a resort town with a brand new atmosphere where nobody knows who they are is just a chance for them to start over. They really could say and pretend to be whom or whatever they want to be and nobody would even know.
2.  Gurov’s view about woman reveals that he is unfaithful to his wife and will always be unfaithful. He is like one of them guys you see on Maury with 20 different babies mama’s and denies every single one. He shows that he does not believe in love, and does not care about how he treats a woman. Woman to him are like Band- Aids he uses them then when he’s done he gets rid of them. Gurov regards woman as an “inferior race” because the way his wife treats him. She makes him feel like all woman are the same, so he thinks he will never fall in love that’s probably why he is the way he is.
3.  To me the antagonist is Gurov. I say this, because he struggles to find love and to be happy. The nature of this conflict is how fast and deeply Gurov fell for Anna out of all the woman including his wife that he dated or messed around with. I think this is a great conflict because Gurov is the type of guy you would never expect to change but he does so fast over a little vacation in Yalta.
4.  Understanding the characteristics about Anna and Gurov I think the last paragraph wouldn’t be a surprise to us at all. I think that Anna and Gurov are going to tell their husband/wife that they found true love and they are happier and want to be with that person instead. I say this because if they are in love with one and other the way they make it seem then they would basically overcome any obstacles to be with one and other.
5. Considering the following assessment of the story “No excuses can be made for the lovers’ adulterous affair. They behave selfishly and irresponsibly. They are immoral-and so is the story”. I think Chekhov’s’ response to the story would be just as messed up as the story was. He would probably say the affair is ok as long as their happy with each other and don’t feel guilty for their actions. My own views of this assesment are that it is absolutely correct. No matter how much you are unhappy or out of love with your partner you should never to any devious actions like Anna and Gurov and many people around the world do. I honestly think that if you are so unhappy and not in love with whoever it may be you should just end the relationship. There is no need to still be married or dating that person because you are just making yourself and your peer more miserable and unhappy.

I Am From

I am from a pair of Nike shoes hanging on the telephone line outside,

I am from the Phillies scoring and hitting line drives.

I am from people going insane when the Eagles score a goal,

I am from aunts complaining there getting to old.

I am from neighbors arguing and screaming ” No leave me alone!”

I am a Dunkin Donuts medium french vanilla coffee with cream and extra sugar that warms my mama’s soul.

I am a stereo system that stays on full blast till it drives neighbors out of control.

I’m from bed knees and baby blue birds nests high up in the trees.

I’m from World War II and people with bad attitudes.

I’m from get away girl ” you irk my soul”, and oh my god “seriously bro?”

I am from the loving grandmother who has passed and the people who love to talk to fast.

I am from the love in my families heart and soul.

I am Katelyn Marie Martin and this is the life I know !
